How to Succeed In Civil Services Examination

Mr. Sridharababu Addanki
IAS Topper 2007-08 (5th position)

"Never-say-die Attitude and willingness to work harder helped me to achieve splendid success" "The Harder You Work, The Luckier You Get / Become " - Sridharababu Addanki

There is a saying that when love and skill work together, expect a miracle. We should love what we do, Then only we can work harder with more vigour. Skill means proper planning, discipline, a clear-cut strategy and good guidance. Loving what we do helps us to be more patient, determined and hardworking. I always believe that hardwork will always be rewarded. One may initially fail, because of some reasons. Many people blame the luck for that. I firmly belive that luck constitutes only negligible percentage in one's success. Luck helps only those persons who work harder. " The harder you work, the luckier you get / Become." When our mind dreams / thinks that we can get top position, we are really capable of getting it. It is only the other factors which act on the candidate, for which he may not fare well in this examinations. One should identify the factors and try to minimize those factors, to maximise his chance of succeeding. coming to the actual preparation strategy, one should keep targets for himself. Divide the syllabus into parts so that they occupy their time available ( say one year ). Keep the monthly targets based on the division. A Candidate's main aim therefore should be to complete the target for the day on any given day. It is not the number of hours per day that a candidate devotes to reading, but the question whether the target put for the day is completed to his satisfaction should be the real concern . One can easily evaluate oneself by one single and simple test. At the end of the day, the candidate should put a question to himself as to how many other aspirants have studied / would have studied like him in the whole nation. Will he stand in the first 100 or 50 or 10 should be the answer. In short the question should be Did I give my life and blood today to stand first in the exam ? " Did I work hard today ( the intensity of hardwork should be such that nobody in India should work as hard as me )" should be the question.

My Preparation Plan

prepare each and every topic elborately to ensure success - Sridharababu Addanki

In my childhood my father used to encourage me, saying that I should become district collector and I should roam in a white Ambassador car with red light on the top. He ensured that I always get first rank right from the second standard. He did not allow me getting even second rank. During my last year B.Tech., My friend Saillaja ( Classmate ) and I had decided that our future course of action should be preparing for civil services so that we become IAS, IPS officers within 2 years. We prepare together for the first year. She had to take up a job and so she had to drop her original plan. I came to Hyderabad in search of good coaching institutes soon after graduation. I had given my first attempt without thorough preparation. There I met friends Laxmikanth and Praveen who helped me immensly. We studied as a group. In the next attempt, I cleared Prelims, mains and went to interview (CSE 2005); I could not get service, as I missed it by 20 marks or so. I was in deep depression that I could not even clear Prelims in 2005 ( Next year). Then I met Balalatha, A physically challenged candidate who made it to civil services in 2005 ( CSP 2004 ). She inspired me and I thought that if a candidate with 90% disability could do wonders, why can't I ? I prepared each and every topic elaborately. I got 202nd position which gave me IPS; I lagged behind 12 marks for getting IAS which was my father's wish. He passed away in 15 days after I got into IPS. I thought I should certainly get IAS and only then his soul would be in peace. This time, I made it a point that I should not commit any mistake from my side. It was a 100% dedicated effor and the result is my fifth position in CSE.
