Cabinet may take up PSC proposals
08 Jun, 2010

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Public Service Commission's (PSC) recommendations to raise the qualification for recruiting candidates to various posts in government service are likely to come up for the consideration of the Cabinet soon.

Official sources told The Hindu here that as per the proposals, candidates who had passed seventh standard alone would be eligible to apply for the post of last grade employees.

At present, all those who can read and write Malayalam, Tamil or Kannada are eligible to apply for the post in this category. While suggesting revision of the qualification, the commission has also been specified that graduates are not eligible to apply for the post.

For the post of lower division clerks, the commission is understood to have proposed to fix the qualification as a pass in Plus Two. This suggestion has been made considering the petitions received by the government against an earlier proposal of the commission for fixing the qualification as graduation. The revised proposal is understood to have been made with a view to providing opportunities for more candidates.

Departments' view In the case of assistants in Secretariat, PSC, Local Fund Audit and other departments, the commission has recommended that graduation with a diploma in computer application may be fixed as the basic qualification. Since the commission has proposed to introduce an additional qualification, there will not be any mark restrictions for those applying for the post. The administrative departments concerned too are understood to be sharing the view of the commission in this regard.

The government will have to consider the job requirement for various posts while prescribing the qualification. Moreover, the problems faced by the educated unemployed too will be considered before clearing the proposals. The suggestions had been referred for the consideration of the Cabinet and were likely to be taken up soon.
