World wonders: Stone Henges
14 Jun, 2010
Britain's hallmark structure since time immemorial, nobody still knows why the Stone Henges were built. Debate is still on whether the monument was connected with faith or it had something to with astrological history.
Believed to have been built close to 5000 years ago, the Stone Henges were constructed with stones brought from the Presley hill ranges, some 240 miles away on the We/sh border. It is also a recorded fact that stones that weighed around 50 tonnes were brought for the construction of the structures from as far as 20 miles away. The transportation of these blocks of rock involved the work of at least 600 people. The construction of the monument is said to have been completed by around 1500 BC.
As earlier mentioned, no details are available with archeologists on when and who was behind the construction of the Stone Henges. It is believed that the building of the monumental structures would have taken.ample man hours and effort and a great deal of architectural excellence.
As the 21 century dawned, the destruction of the Stone Henges too began. The monument is now seeing ruin with many of rts rock blocks being dismantled for use in other construction sites.
