World Wonders: Khufu Pyramid of Jisa
14 Jun, 2010
Situated on the border of the Egyptian city of Cairo, the Khufu Pyramid of Jisa, is believed to have been built by Emperor Khufu IV in 2580 BC, History recalls that the monument was built by Khufu IV as his own tomb.
Built over a span of 20 long years, the monument was constructed using huge granite blocks, number two million, brought from far off places. However, there is no recorded evidence on how the blocks were placed one over the other. Each block is said to be weighing around two tonnes. The pyramid, immediately after construction used to be 145.75 metres high, but as centuries went by it is said to have lost at least 10 metres.
The pyramid, another wonder in architectural history, houses an array of visitors' galleries and two temples. Besides, it has a Queen's Pyramid in the interiors and also a tomb where Hemon. the sculptor of the pyramid, rests.
